I got a little more serious about finding a melon baller with a ratchet arm, and came up with a medium cookie dough scoop, from Good Grips. It is a little bigger than a melon baller, but just barely, and the finished cakes fit under the fertilizer baskets. So thanks again, fertilizer making just got quicker (by 1 1/2 hours)

I tried the melon-baller thing, and was quickly thwarted. So then I took a spoon and some rubber gloves and got the job done very quickly. My fertilizer cakes have finger indentations in them and are irregularly sized, but they seem to be working just fine.
